Our Gut Health Test leverages dried blood spot (DBS) technology to analyze circulating tryptophan (TRP) and its key metabolites – IPA and KYN – along with relevant ratios (IPA:KYN, IPA:TRP, KYN:TRP). These metrics allow us to assess the metabolic output of the gut microbiota, the direction of tryptophan metabolism, and the degree of microbial balance, as well as the body’s response to it.
Importantly, these markers are dynamic and reflect both microbial activity and host response. Low IPA levels can indicate a lack of key IPA-producing species and reduced microbial diversity, while elevated KYN points toward excessive flux through stress-related pathways.
Dietary patterns rich in fiber, polyphenols, and omega-3 fatty acids can help support a favorable balance in tryptophan metabolism, encouraging beneficial indole production like IPA – a signal of improved microbial function and a reduced immune stress. By testing and retesting after lifestyle or dietary interventions, we can track progress and quantify improvement at the metabolic and microbial level.
